Setting and Planning Dance Goals

Goal setting is key in the world of dance and cheerleading, no matter where you are in your dance journey. It is vital to not only set short-term dance goals but to make sure that you also have your long-term dance goals in mind.

Do you have an ultimate dance dream?

Maybe you want to become a professional dancer? Maybe it is to become an NBA cheerleader? Maybe it is to become an NFL cheerleader? Maybe you are trying to make your high school dance team or college dance team? Maybe you are training towards competitive dance? Or.. maybe you are just looking to continue improving on your current dance team!

  • These are your long-term dance goals to have - goals that will take 3-5 years or more to accomplish. Create a specific goal that narrows your focus, so that you can plan for small goals to accomplish it. As an example, your long-term goal may be to make your hometown NBA dance team. This allows you to focus on the root of what you want to accomplish, so you are more prepared to conquer it and identify the weekly goals needed to get there.

Which leads us to our short-term goals. These are the small moves that inspire action and have you working toward that ultimate dance dream. As another example, you aspire to become a professional dancer. This means that your short-term goals would be things like: improving dance technique and getting into dance classes.

Personally, I was never the young dancer that knew to sit down and write out my dance goals. I had my long-term goal (which for me, was to become an NBA dancer) but never sat down to actually plan on how I was going to make it happen for myself to achieve goals that I had. I just kept dancing, cheerleading, and hoping that I would eventually get my lucky shot with a dance team. I wish I had someone to tell me what I am telling you now, which is to GOAL SET and MAKE A PLAN.

So - maybe you are a goal-getter and you will reach those dance related goals without goal setting, but it will take you WAY longer than it potentially could.

I am going to walk you through planning goals and how to set dance goals for 2022 to accomplish your dance dreams! Follow along:

Long-Term Dance Goals

(3-5 years or more)

First off, we need to sit down and write out our long-term goals. Grab your planner and write down 1 to 3 dance goals. We do not want to set too many long-term goals because these are further out in the future and the more we have, the less likely they are all to be accomplished. (life is ever-changing!)

A goal without a plan is just a dream.

Some examples of long-term dance/cheer goals:

  • Making a certain dance team or cheerleading team.

  • Improving in your dance technique.

  • Getting in your personal best shape.

Short-Term Dance Goals

(3-6 months or less)

Take a look at your long-term goals and think about things you can do to achieve them over time. Now that we have a clear vision and direction, you want to figure out what moves you can make in helping you get to your ultimate goal. Think about small things that you can do this month, next month, and so forth that will get you to the point of being where you want to be. Once you have those envisioned, write them down. (make sure that they tie into your long-term goal!)

Some examples of short-term dance/cheer goals:

  • Getting into consistent dance classes (ballet classes, technique dance classes.)

  • Take a few private dance lessons.

  • Preparing for dance auditions.

    • Dance technique, dance style, dance audition outfits, dance interview.

Now that we have a vision of our goals, it is time to actually make it happen.

We are going to plan out our current month, next month, and however far in advanced you are setting goals for.

Ready? Your plan starts, NOW.

I love to get creative with my planner, especially when preparing for dance auditions or when I need to be investing a lot of time/goals around something.

Some of my favorite planning products & necessities:

  1. Write down your schedule

Write down any set events and schedules that you have available - a work schedule, life events, your current dance schedule, etc.

2. Write down the things you will be doing to achieve your dance goals

Dance classes, fitness classes, pro dance prep, pro cheer prep, etc.

3. Planner color-coding!

Here is how-to color code your planner so you will actually use it. Not only does it look more organized but it is also just fun to do! This will keep you more organized and it is a creative way to enjoy your goal planning.

Planner color code key - dance, cheerleading

Once you have chosen your colors, color-code your plans for the month based off of the goals categories that you chose.

4. Commit to your Dance Goals

You have set a schedule for improving yourself but now the tough part comes along. Which is, actually committing to these dance goals and plans you have just set.
Commit to your goals and that dance dream - MAKE IT HAPPEN.
